The World Health Organization shows that the top ten countries consuming alcohol and smoking cigarettes are within the European Peninsula.

The smoking statistics calculate the number of cigarettes per adult annually:

  1. Greece
  2. Slovenia
  3. Ukraine
  4. Bulgaria
  5. Czech Republic
  6. Macedonia
  7. Russia
  8. Moldova
  9. Spain
  10. Bosnia and Herzegovina

The alcohol statistics calculate annual number of litres per capita:

  1. Moldova
  2. Czech Republic
  3. Hungary
  4. Russia
  5. Ukraine
  6. Estonia
  7. Andorra
  8. Romania
  9. Slovenia
  10. Belarus

Do these statistics surprise you, or is it merely a part of European culture? Perhaps it is better to also look into alcohol and smoking related problems in these countries rather than merely the consumption?
